About Ben....

Ben's surgery went well this week, and we are back at home. I hope to post something new tomorrow. In the meantime, I thought I would share a little about Ben with you.

He's a wonderful, funny, sweet 12-year-old boy who happens to have Neurofibromatosis Type 1.  He was diagnosed at around 18 months.

NF1 can affect people very differently.  Some people have very few symptoms and others have extreme complications and challenges.  Until a couple of years ago, Ben's biggest challenges were speech issues and cognitive delays.  Now, he is experiencing orthopedic issues due to neurofibromas (small tumors) that are part of the nerves in his back.  He's had surgery on both feet in the past year and a half.  This year has been more difficult because he's had 4 different procedures on the same foot since April.  We are hopeful that this last procedure...bone fusion...will help him regain the mobility he's lost.  Ben is such a trooper and takes the surgeries and recovery periods in stride.

All of that said, we are very, very blessed.  His smile lights up a room, and he's such a ham.  Yes, he's totally spoiled, but in a good way.  His dad and I could not be more proud of him.  He is a special treasure!  :)
